D is for Decision... i think
in all seriousness, i think i’ve decided to not go back to chula vista in march. that makes it sound as if the ball is entirely in my court when it obviously is not. i would have to get invited again by the head coach in order to go. nonetheless, assuming that happened, which is within reason, i still think i would choose to do the GMS (my coach’s club in CT) training camp in Aiken,...

relax…. closure is coming to my camp entries in the near future. for the time being, know this. these wrenches make a rower drool (so long as you can find a 10mm, 13mm, and a 7/16s).

shadow boxing
we had an interesting saturday p.m. practice. after doing weights in the morning with marginal improvement in my olympic lifts, we had a practice that coupled both our typical band work with some short sprint pieces of 250 meters. i was in the quad that we had rowed a day earlier. as a crew, we were making steady improvement and found no problem with power for the band work and rate for the...
riding waves is better than roller coasters
… the past 24 hours was unfortunately more of a roller coaster ride.
last night, the coach made a bunch of lineups. then he said, “if i didn’t put you in a boat, come see me afterwards.” there was about five of us. it was nothing personal. we just weren’t in the specific lineups that he wanted to make sure to try. nonetheless, it does show that we were a bit of...
meetings and meat
so practices have continued in a similar fashion to last week. the main change to the week has been additional programming and meetings.
monday, we were back to doubles. i believe it was monday when i rowed with my fellow teammate from my penn ac club. both of us were a little frustrated with the assignment, not because we had a huge beef with rowing with each other, but rather because we...
the details of the training facilities.
just move south to san diego/chula vista area, and you’ll find a blue marker. zoom in on that and you’ll see the various points plotted.

R.I.P. Dead Lift
we had our second weightlifting session this morning. although i’ve been thinking constantly about my olympic lifts (dead lift, clean, snatch) since last time, it appears that i have not improved that much yet. the head US coach has a challenging delivery. he is blunt and straightforward, which is fine and fair, but also hard to understand and seems low in tolerance. i think what prevents...
full day
-very short 8k technical row
(eat breakfast)
-long hard piece workout 4x3k
(eat lunch)
-core work & run
so today was the first set of pieces. it went reasonably well though it’s hard to know exactly how we should stack up since we were the only quad on the water. we finished with a decent margin though on the straight fours (a sweep boat with four rowers and no coxswains). the...

Holidaze
so training over christmas went pretty well, but not flawless. to start, i was at GMS, the club of the coach that i follow in CT. there i did not do well on a 6k erg test as i was fighting low sleep and slight illness. no excuse nonetheless. fortunately, i was able to solidly finish out my training there the rest of the weekend.
then, i went onto boston to visit friends, where i was able to...
To Be Continued...
no but seriously. to be continued. sorry about the radio silence over the holidays. back from maine for three days and now out to san diego to head to the USOC training center in chula vista.
more to come on chula vista camp, holiday training, life as it relates to rowing, and so on. to sum it up, i’ll use the words of my grandma. ”up and down like the weathah.”
