last leg
it’s been an ok couple days of cross training. more running than i’m accustomed to, but also some good bike rides in tuscon. nonetheless, the more variables you add, the harder training can become. in this case, i had the added variables of the holidays and road trip travel (which is actually a one-two punch of both the time spent driving and the hours i need to make up for work)....
smokin' cold
it was a chilly morning back in the double. it was not a our usual boat and the rig was slightly different, but it was a real productive row.
the warmup started off ok. we did a reverse pick drill. pick drill is typically where you build the stroke up in short increments from the back end. this means arms for a few strokes, then arms and back, then quarter slide rowing, then half, then 3/4,...

two notes. a shout out to the dutch jenny van dobben de bruijn, who stayed in philly for a while two years ago, and an observation of french cedric berrest going 5:44. he’s in the french double.
2 x 6k
in preparation for a 6k erg test coming up, we did two by 6k this morning.
it went fine. we did them with only 8 minutes rest and controlled ratings.
1. 19:53.8 @ 24spm
avg. 500m split 1:39.4
355 watts
2. 19:50.0 @ 26spm
avg. 500m split 1:39.1
359 watts
it felt good, but just like the 30’ piece, it’s hard to really get my sprint on when the rate is capped. more focus is put...
old beginner
one thing amazing about rowing is how long you can do it and still some days, weeks, or even months feel like you’re still new to the sport or rather new to the stroke that is everything about the sport.
other sports i feel like have multiple aspects to them. a running back in football has ball carrying, running, catching, blocking, tackling, etc. a basketball player has dribbling,...
RUDDERFISH by Drew Ginn: 2k Test: Here's the Wash... →
really good post from Drew Ginn, infamous aussie sweep rower with three olympic gold medals, that talks about his last 2k erg test on sliders and some broader picture stuff too.

30' test-ish
so this morning we had to do 30 minutes with a stroke rate cap of 22 on the erg. originally, it was written on the schedule as a test. reilly, the potomac coach, switched it though to avoid tapering for it. so effectively, it became 30 minutes at a 22 as hard as you can with the surrounding workload. that meant doing the 75 minute workout in the morning yesterday on the water plus an...

– Filippi Lido - Design, implementation and selling rowing boats and accessories
have to love the eng-talian on the filippi site. i think they should have just let google handle the translation. saw this as i was looking up boat dimensions for replacement riggers.

tryptophan-less lactate
so over thanksgiving aside from the prescribed workouts, i did a lactate test with my brother. he’s developing into a formidable coach now, and with me being proficient in lactate testing, it’s easy for him to conduct one on me.
i am fortunate enough to have my own lactate plus thanks to the generosity of nova biomedical. it is a great machine with industry leading accuracy and only...
