Follow Your Heart: Using HR to Gauge Fatigue -... →
great, simple article on heart rate training with some helpful references. it is very clear and straightforward on signs to watch for as you go through training cycles.  explains how some changes are natural and should not cause any alarm.  other changes should act as alarms or signals that merit some attention and possible change in your training.

3 and out.
let me give you the concise rundown of the past three days. Thursday A.M. - warm up then 3x18’ of steady state and drills Thursday A.M.2 - practiced starts on the water and simulated the first 1000 of a race three times (mind you heart rate was 160+ still for these simulations) Thursday P.M. - erg test prep Friday A.M. - 2k erg test Friday P.M. - 2k race on the water (heats of trials...

we had a great row this morning.  it was just a steady state row with even more of a technical, lower intensity emphasis.  we were executing drills well and had a solid consistent rhythm throughout the practice.  it was a solid enough row that as reilly coached us and i made calls the changes were not for fixing problematic things or recovering but rather tightening things up with subtle changes...

longish day
practice this morning was tough.  3x5’ @ 32spm.  we executed them only ok.  things were not as effortless and felt shorter as well.  you want long, sweeping, powerful strokes, and yet a rhythm that somehow feels effortless and as if it builds its own momentum.  we just didn’t quite get there.  after a long cool down, we came in and got some breakfast.  after which, we came back to the...

anti-antioxidants?
in closing for the day, i have been trying to do some research on this after hearing about studies that claim antioxidants may delay muscle recovery after strenuous workouts.  this is in contrast to a lot of other studies that say to take in antioxidants, like vitamin C, post-exercise to combat both a vulnerable immune system as you’re tired and the free radicals created by the breakdown of...

Concept2: CRASH-B Results 2012 →
crash-b’s is the biggest indoor rowing race in the world.  i went to it during college, but haven’t found the energy/time to go back since.  like a lot of somewhat non-essential things, crash-b’s sees a bit of a different crowd during an olympic year since people training for the olympics do not go out of their way to attend.  definitely would have been fun to go and crush it in...

Time to Decorate with Onions →
apologies from the lack of posting.  most of my energy is being spent just getting over this cold.  i have done most of the workouts, but dialed down the intensity of afternoon workouts.  maybe i would just get over it quicker with complete rest.  napping a ton, which is key. anyways, big mike back at penn ac told me to look into this, and as he guessed, it’s right up my alley!  if you know...

soliloquy
To be, or not to be—that is the question: Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune Or to take arms against a sea of troubles And by opposing end them. -granted, my position is far from that of hamlet’s but the metaphors have a more literal application nonetheless.  while i am certainly not suffering “slings and arrows,”...

2-1=1x
took the 1x out this morning because willy is resting his shoulder, which got a slight strain from high pressure turning around naples island.  it was fun to do and a long hard row.  almost all of our morning session rows are around 20k +/-.  this morning was about 23k and that’s with a good bulk of it being at the harder end of steady state. my first few catch-placement drills were quite...

Eskild Ebbesen – University of Copenhagen →
Eskild Ebbesen is a former Danish lightweight rower.  Danish lightweight rowers are notorious for being fit and fast.  The other neat thing about them is that their training is often talked about as if it is mythical folklore.  They do only around an hour of training at a time and yet they have people like Stephansen setting unbelievable erg records.  This video gives you a bit of an insight into...

business as usual
had a great row this morning with willy.  lower intensity steady state, but was sharp and long rowing.  additionally, we had vesper’s coach, scott, on the water with us who gave us some new helpful perspectives.  additionally, reilly is here now.  she wasn’t able to go out with us this morning, but already there will be a change in tempo and concentration thanks to her presence (as...
